Ask 10 people to define success, and you'll probably get 10 different answers. Over the years, executive coach Tony Jeary says success is defined as "achieving objectives we have established in advance. Anything else is by chance or serendipity," he writes in his book Strategic Acceleration: Succeed at the Speed of Life. "The most successful people live their lives on purpose. They don't sit around waiting to see what might happen next."

Your happiness is determined by how you allocate your attention. What you attend to drives your behavior and it determines your happiness. Attention is the glue that holds your life together… The scarcity of attentional resources means that you must consider how you can make and facilitate better decisions about what to pay attention to and in what ways. If you are not as happy as you could be, then you must be misallocating your attention… So changing behavior and enhancing happiness is as much about withdrawing attention from the negative as it is about attending to the positive.
Every successful person needs to learn to balance priorities. Money lost or spent can be regained, but squandered time is not retrievable. You can kill time – and your career – with extended phone calls, lunches and breaks, late starts, and early quits. Misguided priorities (calling on prospects and customers whose potential you assume may be good and short-changing others checked out as probably profitable) also waste time. Use your time wisely and make every hour count.

Assumptions about other people and what they want or don't want can wreak havoc on your relationships. This is just as true in your professional life as in your personal life. Learn specific skills and strategies for making sure you are fully aware of other people's objectives. Try these actions: ask clarifying questions, probe for information, and objectively point out inconsistencies when tasks seem out of line with stated goals or agreed-upon strategies.

Self-knowledge is a key to power. Personal awareness is just as important for professional success as technical competence. Self-knowledge gives you the ability to match your working style with those of the people you work with day in and day out, not to mention the styles of the people with whom you're trying to establish relationships. This lets you take responsibility for the effect you have on other people and learn how to change it if the effect is not what you desire.

In addition to having the skills needed to make a sale (prospecting, presenting, closing, etc.), salespeople also must be proficient in management skills. These include time management, self-management, and even boss management. But managing your boss doesn't mean bossing your manager. It means understanding your boss and managing yourself. Stop trying to change your boss. The key to building a better relationship is a willingness to change yourself. Many salespeople underestimate the power they have to improve a situation by changing their own behavior.

A personal slowdown challenges us to sit down and discover our hidden assets, appreciate our loyal customers and create better ways to serve them, capture new markets, and discover new opportunities. There is no time to give in to negativity. Challenges are the great incubators of new ideas. It's our job to provide the seeds for success in whatever soil we find ourselves. If we keep on shoveling and planting, we can make things grow.

No one can cause you to have any kind of emotional reaction without your first giving them permission to do so. You alone are responsible for your feelings and emotions. When you know what you plan to do with your life, you will not allow annoying situations to deter you from your goals for long. If you set ambitious goals for yourself and work enthusiastically toward them, you will quickly realize that you don’t have time to allow petty annoyances to upset you and keep you from your objectives.
"I fear that one of the great weaknesses in most of us is our tendency to look everywhere except to our own state of mind, for the causes of our difficulties throughout life, and I know, beyond any room for doubt, that we are where we are and what we are, financially and spiritually, because of the dominating thoughts which occupy our minds."

I am going to set down forty-three items which pertain to being yourself. Few people will recognize themselves completely in this list, but if you will take a pencil and check each item that you sincerely believe applies to you, it will be most revealing.
1. The man who consistently is himself maintains his poise under all circumstances, whether the circumstances are favorable or unfavorable.
2. He has control of his emotions at all times.
3. He has perfect self-reliance and self-confidence in everything he undertakes.
4. He does not allow himself to be hurried into any careless action.
5. Increasingly, as he succeeds, he controls his own working hours and the conditions under which he works.
6. He never gripes or complains about anything or anyone.
7. He never slanders or condemns anyone.
8. He never talks about himself unless it is necessary, and then never in a spirit of boasting.
9. He is open-minded on all subjects, with all people.
10. He does not fear anything or anyone.
11. He moves about his affairs with quiet definiteness of purpose.
12. Before expressing an opinion he makes sure he has the facts, and he is not afraid to say “I do not know.”
13. He has no racial or religious prejudices.
14. He eats moderately and avoids every other form of excess.
15. Without pretending to be an expert on all subjects, on all subjects he thinks for himself.
16. He is a dependable citizen who cannot be influenced by any “ism” which may be detrimental to his country or its economy.
17. He gives nobody any reason to be his enemy (but you cannot help it if someone dislikes you because of your success).
18. He is at peace with himself and with all mankind.
19. He cannot ever be poor or miserable, for, come what may, in his heart he remains happy and prosperous.
20. All the member of his family love him and thrill to the sound of his footsteps when he comes home.
21. He expresses his gratitude daily for all of his blessings, and shares his blessings with all who have a right to claim a share.
22. He seeks no revenge for any wrongs or injustices done to him.
23. When he speaks of others he makes every effort to avoid mentioning their faults no matter how much their faults may have affected him.
24. He looks into the future by studying the past, and recognizes that history has a way of repeating itself, that eternal truths do not change with the times.
25. He maintains a positive mental attitude.
26. He is slow to accuse, quick to forgive.
27. When others make honest mistakes, he makes allowances for them.
28. He will not profit in any transaction if it harms anyone else.
29. He keeps himself free from the bondage of debt.
30. Having acquired all the wealth he can use beneficially, he does not strain after more: yet he knows with full assurance he can earn more if it should be advisable.
31. He converts all adversities and defeats into assets.
32. Facing defeat, he knows all defeat is temporary.
33. He has a major objective in life and keeps himself busy attaining it.
34. If he has been turned aside from his objective, he analyzes the experience and profits thereby.
35. His life is what he wishes it to be, and he always expected it to be exactly that.
36. As he successively pictures success within his mind and then attains it, he lets his deeds, not his words, display his success to others.
37. He is well-liked by a great many different kinds of people; people of all races and creeds.
38. He is a living example of what a man may be in the United States of America when he takes possession of his own mind and is willing to live and let live.
39. He is no more disturbed by panics and business depressions than he is by matters which affect only himself.
40. He finds it easy to win the full and hearty co-operation of others.
41. He is fair to his adversaries, but he is practically unbeatable because he possesses a power unknown to most men.
42. He is fortified against disappointment because he knows that anything may happen with or without an obvious cause.
43. He does his best at all times, and never feels the need to apologize when circumstances turn against him.
How many items did you check? If you have three-quarters of these virtues, you probably are aware that you are “your own person,” living your own life, knowing your own mind, being yourself without fear or self-consciousness.

How do you stay the course when it comes to achieving what you want? First, identify what you could be doing better or more efficiently, set a specific goal, and reward yourself. Then, for every sale you make, take a percentage of your earnings and put it into a dedicated fund. Better yet, hang a picture of whatever it is you want in your office, or carry one around with you. When you experience negativity, look at the picture to reinforce what you're working harder for. Soon your dream will be a reality.

When misfortune rears its ugly head, it's easy to overlook the opportunities hiding behind it. Disappointment often clouds our vision so that we can't see all the good things problems leave in their wake. Though setbacks and problems may deprive us of things we thought we wanted, there's often something even better on the horizon. Before you let adversity get you down, make sure your problem isn't hiding a golden opportunity; take a moment to remember how it actually can help you reach your goals.
